Saksalainen Kreator on todellinen thrash metalin instituutio. Faneilleen lähes myyttisiin mittasuhteisiin kasvanut yhtye on rakentanut uransa musiikille, joka on aggressiivisempaa, nopeampaa ja tinkimättömämpää kuin useimmilla aikalaisillaan. Kreator – Hate & Hope summaa bändin yli 40 vuotta kestäneen matkan upeasti. Näyttävästi esiin pääsee myös yhtyeessä vuodesta 2001 loistanut helsinkiläinen Sami Yli-Sirniö, Waltarin ja Barren Earthin riveistä tuttu soolokitaristi.

Ohjaaja Cordula Kablitz-Post seurasi Kreatorin maailmankiertuetta vuoden ajan matkaten Tokiosta Los Angelesiin ja takaisin Ruhrin alueella sijaitseville synnyinmaille. Matkan varrella dokumentti kertaa Länsi-Saksan raskaan teollisuuden kehdossa vuonna 1982 valetun yhtyeen vaiheet koulubändistä maailmanlaajuiseen suosioon.

Laajasta arkistomateriaalista, konserttitaltioinneista ja tuoreista haastatteluista piirtyy muotokuva yhtyeestä, jota on piiskannut eteenpäin taiteellisen kunnianhimon lisäksi myös yhteiskunnallisen vaikuttamisen palo. Kuvamateriaali murtaa myyttejä metallibändien äijämeiningistä ja tuo esiin inhimillisyyden ja yhteisöllisyyden, jotka ovat kannatelleet kokoonpanoa vuosikymmenien ajan. Dokumentteja muun muassa Nina Hagenista, Die Toten Hosenista ja Scooterista aiemmin ohjanneen Kablitz-Postin ammattitaito näkyy siinä, kuinka lähelle kohteet hänet päästävät.

Kreator – Hate & Hope on väkevä muotokuva aggressiivisen metallin uranuurtajasta, joka seisoo vakaasti vihan ja yhteiskunnallisten ristiriitojen vastavoimana.
