Hammer-studion sopimusnäyttelijänä läpimurtonsa tehnyt Caroline Munro ehti tehdä elokuvan myös keskeisen kilpailijan Amicus Productionsin tallissa. Yhtiön viimeiseksi ponnistukseksi jäi Tarzan– ja Mars-kirjailija Edgar Rice Burroughsin romaaneihin perustuva trilogia, jonka elokuvat ohjasi peräkanaa Kevin Connor (From Beyond the Grave, Motel Hell).

Kolmikon keskimmäinen osa At the Earth’s Core perustuu Burroughsin vuonna 1914 ilmestyneeseen tarinaan Maan uumenissa, joka käynnisti Pellucidar-romaanisarjan. Se kertoo sijoittaja David Innesistä ja hänelle ”rautamyyrän” rakentavasta tiedemiehestä Abner Perrystä, jotka testaavat kojetta poraamalla sen walesilaiseen vuoreen. Maa osoittautuu ontoksi, ja herrasmieskaksikko törmää Telluksen uumenissa mitä kummallisimpiin olentoihin.

Aika on patinoinut mahtipontiset lavasteet ja hirviödesignin camp-kerroksella, jonka alta paistaa vilpitön halu tehdä aikuisten makuun vetoavaa tieteisseikkailua. Syvyyksistä paljastuvat viidakot kätkevät suojiinsa muun muassa hirviöiden pyörittämiä orjatyökaivoksia ja ihmisiä hypnotisoivia paholaislintuja.

Doug McClure vetää pirteän sankariroolin Innesinä, Hammer-ikoni Peter Cushing lataa Perryyn vanhemman valtiomiehen uskottavuutta. Genrekentän tekijänaiseksi jo noussut Munro loistaa maan kaikkien kerrosten miehet lumoavana Diana, joka ei alistu tahdottomaksi koristeeksi. Seuraavan kerran näyttelijätär nähtiin valkokankaalla elokuvassa 007 rakastettuni (1977).

”At the Earth’s Core sees an American financier ([Doug] McClure) team up with an eccentric inventor (Peter Cushing, very much in Doctor Who mode), who has built a burrowing machine, The Mole, designed to travel through mountain ranges. On their maiden voyage things very quickly go awry and they find themselves heading deep into the earth, where they finally come to a stop having broken through to the cavernous interior world of Pellucidar. They soon discover humans who are being kept as slaves by the Sagoths, who are controlled telepathically by dinosaur-like bird creatures called the Mahars. One of these humans is naturally a beautiful princess (played by the incredibly luminous Caroline Munro) —
