Viime vuonna viisikymppisiään viettänyt, kriitikoiden ja katsojien laajalti ylistämä pakanakauhun klassikko The Wicker Man on jälleen ajankohtainen. Syynä on ohjaaja Robin Hardyn poikien Dominic ja Justin Hardyn poikkeuksellinen dokumentti Children of The Wicker Man, joka sai maailmanensi-iltansa Lontoon FrightFest-tapahtumassa elokuussa ja nähdään luonnollisesti nyt myös Night Visions -festivaalikattauksessa.

Tarinassa Edward Woodwardin (tv-sarja Kutsukaa McCall) näyttelemä vanhurskas poliisi Howie saapuu selvittämään nuoren tytön katoamista syrjäiselle saarelle. Tutkimus ihmetyttää Lordi Summerislen (Christopher Lee) hallitseman saaren asukkaita, koska kukaan ei tunnu olevan kadoksissa. Itsepintainen poliisi ei kuitenkaan jätä työtään kesken. Paikallisten pakanalliset ja vapaamieliset perinteet avautuvat hiljalleen hartaalle kristitylle, kun tutkimukset etenevät kohti vääjäämätöntä ja ikimuistettavaa loppuaan.

The Wicker Mania on kutsuttu sekä kauhun Citizen Kaneksi että 2000-luvun älykkäämmän genre-elokuvan kantaisäksi. Folk horror -lajityypin uutta nousua tuskin olisi liioin saatu todistaa ilman tämän klassikon olemassaoloa ja etabloitunutta asemaa.

Juuri 50 vuotta täyttäneen The Texas Chain Saw Massacren tavoin se ei ole menettänyt iän myötä vähääkään tehostaan. Siten on myös helppo ymmärtää, että Sir Christopher Lee piti The Wicker Mania 275 pitkää elokuvaa kattaneen uransa parhaana teoksena.
